This cache is located in a former Rest Area at the intersection of State Highway 3 and Pauri Rd, the turnoff to Wanganui Prison.
I remember stopping at this rest area a couple of times as a kid when travelling from Wangas to Palmy to visit my Grandparents. When driving past during one such trip, we noticed trucks dumping gravel at the entrances to block off public access. Since then, the rest area has become understandably overgrown. Established in 1978, Wanganui Prison has capacity for up to 538 minimum to high security male prisoners. It has two Specialist units (Maori Focus Unit and Self Care Unit) to aid in Dept of Correction's goal of getting prisoners to live offence-free lives once released. Best accessed when travelling SOUTH (ie, away from Wanganui) so that you don't have to cross the stream of traffic. Parking is available at the former exit (see waypoint)
