Geocache Description:

The Bull Stone

There are many standing stones across Fife, but this small stone goes mostly un-noticed, even though it has more of a story than most.

Standing at only 1m high this stone has an hourglass shape due to its usage many years ago. The worn section in the middle is actually the result of the rubbing action of chains and ropes that were used to tether bulls to the stone, which would then run around the stone as they were tormented by specially bred bull-dogs.

These bull-bating events were popular around the time of Queen Anne. An iron stake was sometimes used, but in this case a small 1 metre length of granite was used to tether the Leslie bulls. This is infact how "bulldogs" were so called.

Eventually the Cruelty to Animals Act of 1835 put an end to the practice of bull-baiting, but this standing stone remains in place to remind locals of this sport from days gone by.

Lots of free and easy parking. Bring your own Pen!

Take a seat and imagine the sport of bull baiting taking place in front of you around the 1700's.

This is a magnetic nano surrounded by many houses, so much care required to retrieve and replace without being seen!
