Geocache Description:

The cache IS at the posted coordinates!  Ratings are mainly for the 9 or 10 caches needed leading up to this. Hiking boots and walking stick recommended, but I placed this in shorts and sandals. Container contains a log only, BYOP, no FTF prize...this one is all about the challenge.

Congratulations to Paracelsus and BooDogMama for their co-FTF

Take the NOGPS! Challenge             NOGPS!

With all the Challenges I have been enjoying recently, I thought it was high time to start giving back.  So I give you the NOGPS! Challenge.  I challenge you to find 10 caches without using a GPS-enabled device.  You may have already completed some or all of the requirements, as there are no date restrictions.

Many cachers have found a geocache or two without using a GPSr for one reason or another.  Maybe you left it at home?  Maybe the batteries died but you went for it anyway?  Maybe you stumbled upon a cache accidentally?  This challenge just formalizes what everyone has already done at least once or twice (or over 500 times in my case :-)

Requirements
Just to make it interesting, though, let's add a few requirements:

 DOs:
1.  You must find and log TEN (10) caches of type Traditional, Multi, or Unknown only WITHOUT USING A GPSr or other GPS-enabled device (or anyone in your party using one either)
2.  You must have at least TWO (2) finds of each of the 3 types (Traditional, Multi, and Unknown)
3.  You must have at least TWO (2) finds with a Terrain rating of 3 or higher and TWO (2) finds with a Terrain rating of 4 or higher (so they are not all drive-ups)
4.  You MAY use this cache as one of your 10
5. You MAY sign the log at any time (if you really feel the desire to), although the purist in me prefers completing the challenge and then finding and signing the log as a reward.

 DON'TS:
1. No Letterbox Hybrid, Event, Virtual, CITO, EarthCache, etc types count toward your total since they often don't require GPS anyway.
2. You may not log this cache more than once.
3. Please don't mark this as a Find until you have completed the requirements AND signed the log.

Verification
You may display your list of 10 in your log in any manner you choose (Bookmark, Text, Screenshot, GSAK, Spreadsheet, etc)

However, I recently was granted access to the Master Control Segment of the Global Position System (the global network of ground facilities that track the GPS satellites and monitor their transmissions), so I will be spot checking to see whether you actually used your GPSr or not! So don't try any funny business!

The intent is to not use a GPS-enabled device to FIND the cache. So using the live GPS satellite map on your smartphone to pinpoint the lamppost that houses a cache would not qualify. But for driving to the general area, you may do that however you choose, including using your car GPS, since you are not FINDING the cache during your drive.

Suggestions for finding Geocaches without a GPSr (if you want them)
Study the satellite map.  Then study it again and look from all directions.
Use the 45 degree view to get a visual of the area, but rely on the overhead view for accuracy! Next, create a set of instructions for yourself.
Start big (street directions), and then get smaller (major trails or structures) and smaller (individual landmarks) and smaller (hint/size).
Count items (houses, telephone poles, fence posts, trees, dashes on the pavement or anything that can be counted).
Look for any UNIQUE landmarks that you will be able to recognize when you get nearby (power poles, unique trees, strange trail markings, etc).
Measure distances (and be ready to pace them off).
Note the hint and the size of the container.
And finally, go out there and look for it! Don't give up!!

Final Request
In your log, please write about any adventures you had while NOT using a GPSr! I would love to hear your stories. Have fun!
