Geocache Description:

Fort Riley, Kansas, used to be an "OPEN" post at one time, meaning that there were no entry checkpoints and that anyone could enter the installation at any given time from any entry point.

Unfortunately, the events of September 11, 2001, changed all that. There are now checkpoints, periodical vehicle searches, and other security measures taken after that day in American history.

Anyway, this area was once known as the back route onto Fort Riley and persons that lived in the Ogden or Manhattan, KS, areas would often use this back route to get onto post and to work. This route would be used in order to avoid all the traffic tie-ups at the Ogden Gate. There is also a tank trail in the area that armored vehicles or other heavy vehicles would use in order not to damage the hard-top road.

Today, there is a perimeter fence, locked gate, very large chunks of rock, and other obstacles blocking off this once highly used back route - ENTRY IS NOT POSSIBLE onto Fort Riley from this location. Also, there are some live-fire ranges north of this area. DO NOT enter Fort Riley for any reason for this cache, it is not necessary.

The easiest route to location is to travel east on Huebner Road from Fort Riley OR west on Fort Riley Blvd from Ogden. If traveling from Fort Riley-to-Ogden, turn LEFT (north) onto Mallon Road just after exiting the Ogden Gate. If traveling from Ogden-to-Fort Riley, turn RIGHT (north) onto Mallon Road BEFORE you enter the Ogden Gate. THERE IS NO REASON TO ENTER FORT RILEY IN ORDER TO GET TO THIS CACHE. Travel north on Mallon Road until you reach general vicinity of cache location.

Always thought that the Ogden, KS, area could use a few more caches. This cache is placed somewhere OPPOSITE of the Fort Riley gate. There is no reason to enter Fort Riley from this point, if you do, you may have a bad day!! There is no reason to cross the nearby barb wire fence that is clearly marked "No Trespassing".

Coordinates are placed as close as possible to cache location - overhead cover, and general area, may affect whatever electronic device you use - you have been warned. Watch out for those thorns, I took one in the face and buttock - they do hurt!! You have been warned!!

Cache container that you will be searching for is a MATCHSTICK with something attached. IF you find anything other than the described item/hints/clues, that is NOT the proper container.

UPDATE: April 20, 2014 - Re-positioned container due to recent tree pruning operations. Updated coordinates; same container.

UPDATE: July 19, 2014 - Replaced container; updated coordinates.

UPDATE: July 09, 2015 - Visited site for a maintenance check and replacement container is missing. However, did find the ORIGINAL container!!!! YAY!!! Updated coordinates as accurately as possible. Adjusted D/T ratings just a teeny bit.
