This cache has been archived.

blackbolt729: As stated one month ago, this series and these caches had a good run, but it is time to move on. Thank you to everyone who found them and the neat "civil war" type logs! They were fun to read.

John Buford Jr. was born in Woodford County, Kentucky on 3/4/1826. Buford was a West Point graduate and master cavalryman. During the Civil War Buford was able to hold off the rebels on the Northwest side of Gettysburg until the arrival of the Union Infantry. Buford died shortly after the war on 12/16/1863 of Typhoid Fever. His wife Pattie was unable to attend his funeral due to her own sickness. During Buford's funeral service, President Lincoln was among the mourners. Burford also had a "A" list of famous Civil War Generals for pallbeares that included Sickles, Hancock, Doubleday, Casey, Heintzelman, Warren and Schofield. Buford was burried at West Point along side of Lt. Alonzo Cushing. Cushing died defending Cemetery Ridge, which Buford picked for Cushing to command and defend.
