Another in the series of Central Texas Airports - KRCK.
The is an airport now owned by the City of Rockdale, Texas, where I lived as a teenager. It was previously a private field owned by H. H. Coffield, who was for many years the Chairman of the Texas Board of Corrections and one of those Texas Oilmen you read about. A buddy and I used to hang out here while we were in Junior/High school, as we had a nodding acquaintance with Coffield's personal pilot. He flew a B35 V-tail Bonanza. There was a lot of activity at this field, even though at the time only one plane was hangared there. Mr. Coffield once purchased a number of surplus B-25 and A-26 warbirds and was having them converted to cargo planes to sell in South America. This was enormously interesting to two teenaged kids interested in aircraft. We got to crawl all over those planes. He also bought a number of military gliders (the kind you have to tow behind another plane). I never found out why he bought those, but they disappeared sometime in the years after my family moved away. No need to enter the property, except possibly to avoid parking on the narrow shoulderless road that goes by. Park and Grab.
