Geocache Description:

WOLVESEY CASTLE...... (OLD BISHOP'S PALACE)

*****I am sorry to have been forced to move this again but because (i think) a muggle had been removing the cache i have had to place this slightly away from the castle gates. The cache is now about 15ft away from the gate. YOU DO NOT NEED TO ENTER THE CASTLE FOR THIS CACHE NOR CLIMB WALLS ETC. Please read hint for giveaway. .*******

The cache area is still wheelchair accessible but any cachers restricted completely to their chair will need someone tall to reach up.

Wolvesey has been an important residence of the wealthy and powerful Bishops of Winchester since Anglo-Saxon times. Standing next to Winchester Cathedral, the extensive surviving ruins of the palace date largely from the 12th-century work of Bishop Henry of Blois. The last great occasion here was on 25 July 1554, when Queen Mary and Philip of Spain held their wedding breakfast in the East Hall.

Although known today as a castle, Wolvesey was in fact a luxurious palace. The original approach to the palace, through a gate in the city wall, led into an outer courtyard containing stables, barns, a great wool store, and the bishop’s prison.

There is an audible tour available from English Heritage on their website at http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/wolvesey-castle-old-bishops-palace/audio/ or search the net for 'wolvesey castle audio tour' and follow the link to the official English Heritage website.

Another useful link is the opening times of the castle- http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/wolvesey-castle-old-bishops-palace/prices-and-opening-times

The actual cache is a nano and is hidden NEAR the castle walls (not in it or on it),

There is no reason to go into the actual castle for this cache which is placed in a public area, you do not need to climb walls, squeeze through gaps or enter the castle walls in any way to access this cache which is in a public area (unfortunately the groundskeeper informs me this has happened previously).

You do not have to go through any gates to get this cache and if you find yourself facing the Bishop's Prison there is no come back on me :-)

Certain parts of the castle are open to the general public and are a facinating piece of history (see English Heritage website for opening times).

I hope you enjoy the castle and the surrounding areas.

Dont forget to find FEEDING TIME FOR THE DUCKS while you are in the area.

Have Fun
