This is not really the end of the road, but only of the paved section. This used to be the stage-coach route to Klamath Falls. It is still possible to drive to Klamath Falls from here, but don't attempt to get to K Falls without a 4WD high clearance vehicle. Parts of the road are steep and rocky, and there are sections of deep mud after periods of rain.
A few miles upriver from here was the Klamath Hot Springs Hotel, whose many famous guests included President Herbert Hoover, Zane Grey and Amelia Earheart. The hotel burned down in 1915.
The Upper Klamath River is an exciting white water rafting ride, with over 30 class 3 to 4+ rapids. Several outfitters (e.g. Noah's Rafting, Kokopelli's River Guides) offer regular trips.
There is abundant wildlife here, so look out along the river to see osprey, great blue herons, kingfishers and bald eagles.
