Geocache Description:

A cache hidden on the island of Spinalonga.

If you are local, you will know the history of Spinalonga very well. If you are on holiday, then a visit to this fascinating island is essential. Made popular by Victoria Hislop's novel, 'The Island', which tells a heart warming tale of the lepers exiled here, Spinalonga also has a wealth of social, political and military history from the Venetian and Turkish occupations. Indeed, there is much to learn about and to see on the island. For further information, please see Spinalonga
.
Regular trips run to the island from Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Plaka and tour guides are also available. Please note that there is a 2 Euro entrance fee to enter the walls and restricted opening times apply.

The cache was hidden to show our appreciation of the island and all that it represents. The container is of a type used regularly in the UK and blends in very well with it's surroundings. It contains a log book and room for very small swaps. You will need your own pen/cil. Given the location, we ask that fellow cachers show some of the community spirit displayed by the last inhabitants and help to 'self maintain' the cache by replacing log books when necessary, etc. Thank you. We hope you enjoy finding the cache, admiring the stunning views and are inspired by the island that is Spinalonga.

Small note on cache maintenance: OMILOS has offered to help. Thanks!
