A Lambs @ 9 themed cache placed alongside a footpath closed to a local Masham landmark (we’re sorry but we can’t mention the name of the establishment on the cache page but I’m sure you’ll realise what it is when you get to the cache site!) Brewing has been a tradition in Masham since the Twelfth Century and the establishment of the “Peculiar Court of Masham”. A semi quasi court set up by the then Bishop of York as a result of a legacy by Roger de Mowbray to avoid having to make regular visits and in order to limit the arduous and dangerous journey between York and Masham. Beer is the world's most widely consumed alcoholic beverage; it is the third-most popular drink overall, after water and tea. It is thought by some to be the oldest fermented beverage in the world. Beer is produced by the saccharification (the process of breaking a complex carbohydrate (as starch) into simple sugars and the fermentation of the resulting sugar. The starch and saccharification enzymes are often derived from malted cereal grains, most commonly malted barley and malted wheat. Most beer is flavoured with hops, which add bitterness and act as a natural preservative, though other flavourings such as herbs or fruit may occasionally be included. The strength of beer is usually around 4% to 6% alcohol by volume. The Building you can see from the footpath was originally the North Yorkshire Malt Roasting Company and then an animal feed company before the present business was established. Thirsty?
