Rudolph Nureyev was one of the most famous male ballet dancers in the 20th century. He was born on March 17, 1938, on a train near Irkutsk, Siberia, while his mother was travelling to Vladivostock.
It was when his mother took him and his sisters to a performance of the ballet " Song of the Cranes", that he fell in love with dance. At age 17 he was accepted by the Leningrad Choregraphic School which was the associate school of Kirov Ballet. When the Kirov's leading male dancer, Konstantin Sergevev, was injured in 1961, Nureyev was chosen to replace him in Kirov's European Tour. It was on June 16 of that year, in Paris, that Rudolph defected to the West with the help of the French police.
Rudolph danced with many ballet companies, including the Grand Ballet Du Marquis de Cuevas, the Royal Danish Ballet, and the Royal Ballet. In 1983, he was appointed director of the Paris Opera Ballet, where he continued to both dance and direct. He died on January 6, 1993.
