Die Hündin Laika (russisch Лайка) war das erste Lebewesen, das vom Menschen gezielt in eine Umlaufbahn um die Erde befördert wurde. Im Rahmen der Mission Sputnik 2 wurde sie am 3. November 1957 an Bord des sowjetischen Raumflugkörpers ins All geschickt. Ihre Rückkehr zur Erde war zwar nicht vorgesehen, dennoch überraschte ihr früher Tod. Über den Zeitpunkt ihres Todes und die Todesursache herrschte jahrzehntelang Unklarheit. 2002 wurde bekannt, dass Laika einige Stunden nach dem Start der Rakete starb, vermutlich an Überhitzung und Stress. Die Mission gilt dennoch als Erfolg. Die Erkenntnisse aus Sputnik 2 ermöglichten letztlich erst die bemannte Raumfahrt mit Juri Gagarin.

The dog Laika (Russian Лайка) was the first living creature, that was specifically promoted by man into orbit around the Earth. As part of the Sputnik 2 mission, it was on 3 Sent November 1957 aboard the Soviet spacecraft into space. Their return to Earth was not provided for, but her surprise early death. About the time of her death and the cause of death remained unknown for decades. 2002, announced that Laika died several hours after the launch of the rocket, probably due to overheating and stress. The mission is still a success. The findings from Sputnik 2 allowed ultimately only human spaceflight with Yuri Gagarin.
