Introduction
This walk takes you around a loop encompassing Okehampton’s closed road (Old Road) and skirts the Okehampton Show Ground. Once upon a time this was the main artery out of Devon and into Cornwall.
In the late 80’s the heavy traffic through Okehampton was alleviated by the Okehampton bypass which runs along the opposite side of the valley from Tongue End to Sourton.
Some residents feared that the opening of the new bypass would mean tourists would no longer visit the town - Just as happened to Radiator Springs on Route 66 in Disney’s “Cars”.
The Plot
Lightning McQueen has gone missing (again). Your job is to park at one of the two parking waypoints on this circuit and visit each of Lightning’s friends (including British agent Holly Shiftwell who was over visiting Mater) Each friend has a coloured clue to show you that will help you decrypt the coordinates of where Lightning is hanging out.
If you haven’t seen the films – don’t worry! Just enjoy the walk and note the lettered/coloured clues as you go.
The Route
Route 66 this aint! The walk is mainly on narrow country lanes but there is easily space to get out the way of the occasional car. The section between Sarge and Mack runs alongside the busier road to Bude. Although there is a wide level verge you can walk along this section is not suitable for buggies (an off roader is ok though) and children should be kept under close supervision.
The walk takes an hour at a three year-old’s pace.
