Geocache Description:

The given coordinates will take you to an area where the erosional phenomena of "Splash Erosion" is extremely obvious. Splash erosion or rain drop impact represents the the type of erosion at this site. Splash erosion results from the bombardment of the soil surface by rain drops. Rain drops behave as little bombs when falling on exposed or bare soil, displacing soil particles and destroying soil structure. Studies in America have shown that splashed particles may rise as high as 0.6 metres above the ground and move up to 1.5 metres horizontally. Splash erosion results in the formation of surface crusts which reduce infiltration resulting in the start of runoff. The absence of permeable soil here coupled with the soft bedrock of sandstone and compacted clay, with some softer fractured limestone, make this area an easy target for splash erosion.

In order to log this EC, please email me the answers to the questions below.

1. Why do you think this area is so prone to splash erosion?

2. Why do you think the exposed rock here is so easily displaced by this form of erosion?

3. (optional) Take a photo of yourself or your GPSR with the eroded area in the background.
