Wanaque Mountains Overlook Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: From the Northern Region Office, New Jersey State Parks Department:

Over a year ago New Jersey enacted a policy that all geocachers must obtain a permit to have their cache on State Park property. We have informed all geocaching host that this is their responsibility and have given them ample time to go about getting their permits. At this time, over a year later, there are still several caches that haven’t complied.

We ask that as the land managers for the attached properties we would like to have these illegal caches removed.

Based on the list provided by the state, I am forced to archive this listing. If you have a permit, get a permit or don't believe your cache is on state park/forest land, please contact me via email. Make sure you include the GC code.

If you don't plan to get a permit, please remove your geocache so it doesn't become geo-trash.

Geocache Description:

This geocache is at an outcropping that, at just under 800 ft, has a beautiful view east overlooking the Wanaque Mountains surrounding Wanaque Reservior. Though Wanaque and Monksville Reserviors area close by they are hidden by the hills surrounding them.

It seems others have found various way into these woods. I have just uploaded two trail maps of the key ATV trails through these woods. I hope these maps help you to the two geocaches in these woods. The maps show four ways into the woods. One main entrance is across from Paul's Place while another is located just north of the Entrance to Green Turtle Pond, where you can also park. Use your GPS with these maps to help you to the geocaches.

The geocache is located at what I call the Wanaque Mountains Overlook, and is a total one way hike of 0.72 mile from the Green Turtle Pond entrance. The outcrop looks eastward and has a very pretty view of the Wanaque Mountains and the southern portion of the Ramapo Mountains. The spot is close by Greenwood Lake Airport, and occasionally a low flying airplane will fly overhead either taking off or landing. Otherwise the rock outcrop overlook is a quiet location off the ATV trails, and is sporadically populated with cedars. It is actually a nice place for a picnic. From May to August bring along bug netting, the deer flies can be bad. However, once at the outcrop the biting flies seem to significantly diminish in number. Most of the year there are no flies.

The outcrop is steep in places so if you have brought young children along with you make sure you take the proper precautions to keep them safe. The cache is hidden in a safe location so don't search in steep or otherwise unsafe locations. I used waypoint averaging to get the most, accurate and precise latitudes and longitudes. The cache is a small black camouflage lock box, but big enough to contain a number of trinkets and the log. I placed a few small items in the box to get the cache started.

This cache is located in the Green Turtle Pond State Park lands and this overlook has a wonderful view and is a nice place for a backpack picnic.
