Known simply as The Peaks these mountains were a welcome sight in summer for travelers both East and West bound having traversed miles and miles of desert country. In heavy snow years you can still see small patches of snow throughout the summer. Winter time they become a majestic snow capped range visable from nearly 100 miles away.

Early Route 66 drivers also had the opportunity to drive, if they were brave enough, to the top of the saddle on the Weatherford toll road. Today this area is designated wilderness with several trails for non motorized/mechanical travel.

These peaks were once a single volcanic mountain similar to Mt Fuji in Japan, scientists believe a large eruption much like Mt St. Helens blew the top off in a north easterly direction leaving several peaks. Just for fun, take your hands and align them with the slopes and you can visualize just how high the original mountain might have been. Today Mount Humphrey’s, the Northwest peak is the highest point in Arizona rising 12,633 feet above sea level.
