Geocache Description:

Its hard to "see' this area as it was 235 years ago...in the year 1777 it was a clearing on the Mt. Independence Military road.  Here is it's story...

On the evening of July 6-7, 1777 nearly a thousand British and German soldiers slept here after a day of chasing General St. Clair's American Army on their retreat from Ticonderoga and Mt. Independence. By nightfall on the 7th several hundred of these British and German soldiers would be dead or wounded.

Imagine 200 camp fires and exhausted men, tormented by Misquitoes falling into a fitful sleep. At 2 am the Britsh Comander General Frasier woke his Advanced Guard and started towards Hubbardton just a few miles over Sargent's hill.  At 5am the battle began and by 10 am it was over. The only battle of the Revolutionary war fought in Vermont!  Many weeks later the wounded survivors of the battle were moved back though Lacey's Camp on their way to Hospital at Ticonderoga.  Many more filled unmarked mass graves on the Battlefield. Such a sad note to contemplate.
