One of a number of caches around a lovely little circular walk around the villages of Tow Law and Thornley.
Thornley is a pretty hill top village about three miles east of Wolsingham. The village is almost unique in that it is not accessed by a main road. It is most easily approached from Tow law via the B6257.
The area around Thornley is thought to have been settled since Iron age/Roman-British times; there is evidence of occupation about a quarter of a mile north west of the present Thornley Hall.
The earliest record of Thornley is in a land grant 1070-1080. However only Greenwell farm gets a mentioned in the Bolden Book of 1183. The Bolden Book however is a customal account of the areas of importance to the Bishops of Durham and is unlike, the Domesday book, not a fully comprehensive record. Well preserved earthwork enclosures and ridge and furrow fields suggest the existence of a medieval village around Thornley Hall.
