Geocache Description:

Another in the series of caches near metro stations, this time outside the entrance of Zoloti Vorota.

Kyiv is an ancient city, and the Golden Gate was an entrance to the old city fortification. One of three gates built by Yaroslav the Wise, the Golden Gate was constructed in 1017-1024. It was partially destroyed in 1240 by Batu Khan's Golden Horde, but remained as a gate to the city until falling into ruins in the 18th century. The gate was reconstructed in 1982 for the 1500th anniversary of Kyiv, and in 1997 a monument of Yaroslav the Wise was unveiled near the west end.
