Walhachin, which means 'Land of the Round Rock' in the Thompson language, is a small town in the Thompson Country region of B.C. located about 10 km west of Kamloops Lake off the Trans-Canada Highway and 65 km west of Kamloops on the south shore of the Thompson River.  The town site is 1 km in from Highway 1.  In its hey-days of 1909 to 1914 this historic town was an affluent colony of English settlers.  The community of gentlemen farmers were primarily members of the English upper-class and titled aristocracy.  This pioneer community boasted luxurious amenities such as a hotel with an elegantly appointed dining room, fine stone golf homes with maids, servants and valets, a Chinese laundry, a cricket and polo field, swimming pool, skating rink and tennis courts.  By 1914 300 residents called Walhachin home.

Although irrigating the orchards was a constant trial, it was the onset of World War 1 which caused many of the Brits to return home to fight for their country.  Most never returned, and by 1922 the last resident had left.

Recent activity in this area includes quarrying rock for railbed ballast and growing alfalfa to provide winter hay for grazing cattle.

While exploring this area check out the Museum, open Friday through Monday 10:00 - 5:00.
