Geocache Description:

As I drive around this part of Maine, I find that I have a particular curiosity about this kind of feature. To whit: of what is the community afraid? Also: how effective is the protection provided, and is this the most cost-effective strategy?

Those of you who may be familiar with my other work, notably Community Guardens #1 (GC3NGMZ) and Community Guardens #2 (GC3NGN7), know of my dedication to matching the degree of ambient threat to the protective features that are required. The feature before you is a mess, and totally inadequate to the task: the children and adults living nearby are at great risk from an emerging catastrophe. This particular feature may not elicit much sympathy as the community is remote; however, I am a fan in this instance of the maxim that security is, above all, only as good as the weakest link.

That threat is nothing less than the Phlebobbergaenger, an intergeneric hybrid: a cross between the genetic material of mosquitoes and dung beetles. The “dung” is saturated with a potent blood anticoagulant from the saliva gland of the mosquito, and it represents instant yuchh to humans, who have been known to dissolve within minutes. It is a particularly disgusting mess to witness – as I have, from the vantage of my protective suit - the Dionysian gluttony of millions of these creatures fluttering down into a puddle of ooze that not five minutes before was a living entity, smiling, breathing, chatting. The Phlebobbergaenger dive bombs its victim with the “dung” and if any portion touches a cut, scab, an open sore or mucous membrane, it is lights out, game over. If you hear one of these buggers, it is already too late, time to sign St. Peter’s book.  Antibiotic agents are not effective, mostly because your bodily parts have liquified by the time you are ready to administer them.

These foul creatures were bred in California by military scientists, but escaped during a recent earthquake event, when the containment seals were breached. The US Government has since been tracking the population’s progress, but to date has been unsuccessful suppressing its spread. What has directly affected us in Maine is a small sample population on loan to Jackson Labs on the coast, which ran afoul when it was hijacked at a truck stop. The two hijackers are, poetic justice aside, no longer of this earth, but that is cold comfort to the rest of us. (That is, we believe there were two.)

In any event, I have left a container larger than was the case in my two prior field sites. This is to accommodate any who may want to leave an original of their Last Will and Testament. Don’t worry about filling in the beneficiary, I have a stamp. I would feel it a privilege to utilize any funds available as a contribution to wiping out this nastiness, and I thank my lucky stars that I am still around to – OH MY G-!

Congrats to ST on his great personal sacrifice for FTF.
