A Wyoming cowboy tale. Please bring a live human with ya, cell service is rare here. But if ya go West out of the canyon you are likely ta get a few bars. A turn out for a large SUV is near the site. Be careful getting back onto the Hwy.
Been driving past this place for several years now, and every time I do a story bubbles up from the past. A story that must be retold as I remember it. This is about a cowboy ("Uncle Willie") I grew up around, no relation ta me just a seemed to be at every sheep shearing, cattle branding an cutting event. He worked fences for every ranch within 250 miles. He could eat a whole hog with o pot of beans all by his lone self. What a man will never forget is the wisdom that fell from his lips, he knew just about every thing a man should know. Things like "a ham n cheese sandwich will last a whole week in a saddle bag, but no mor'n a day, with butter or mayo on it." Or " if-n ya blow yer breath in ta yer horse's nose before ya clumb aboard the ride wil be much better for both of ya". One day while riding fence He just busted out saying " ya know a man of God, cause the wear on his knees, match the wear on his backside of his britches". Uncle Willie had a patch over his right eye, n nobody could tell me how he lost it. He covered the bad spot with a rugged sweat stained patch. Saw the ugly hole once, push n cattle with him along the Platte river on hot summers day, while he cleaned the dust outta it. So one day we were sitting under a big cottonwood tree, along side a creek deep n wide. Talking bout nutin much when he just stopped! Looked across the small valley, stare n at who knows what. I knew the wisdom was coming down with the high water. So's I leaned in ta hear every word. "never, son, I mean never look through a knothole in a wooden fence with n yer good eye at the "Mustang Ranch in Nevada". What!! When were ya in Nevada? Silence, he just looked off in ta the distance with not another word. Ya know ta this day I've, not a notion of what he was a talk n bout, do you?
