Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the end of the road to the relocated community of Big Brook.

To get to this geocache, turn off Route 430 to go Cook's Harbor. Continue down this road until you see a dirt road on the Left which leads about 16km to Big Brook. Continue until you cannot drive any further. Ending this road is where a bridge used to stand, that led to the community of Eddie's Cove, but is now removed due to the relocation. The cache is a camo'd peanut butter jar which you will find if you follow a little path to the right of the old bridge. Contains logbook, pencil, and some trinkets, and a Travel Bug waiting for the FTF!

This route will offer some very scenic and historic views.

" Big Brook had three households with 10 permanent residents, three of whom are school-age children. It is located at the end of a 16-kilometre gravel road on the Northern Peninsula. There is no school, medical clinic or church and the school children were bussed 28 kilometres to the school in Cook’s Harbour.
All the residents wanted to make this move to improve access to education, health care, employment opportunities and other amenities. In considering this relocation, government also took into account the residents’ social quality of life. For instance, during adverse winter weather, road blockages at home caused the children to miss an excessive amount of time from school.
The province will save approximately $122,000 annually by discontinuing road maintenance, bus service and by terminating Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro service. Government expects to recoup the cost within three years." (--Taken from the Gov't of NL website. http://www.releases.gov.nl.ca/releases/2004/mpa/0213n05.htm)
