Geocache Description:

Situated south of the main Wellington CBD, Brooklyn is a hilltop suburb comprising a blend of circa 1900 weatherboard villa/bungalow houses around the central core, blending with more recent adjacent subdivisions built in the 1970's and 1990's. The shops, bars, cinema, and food outlets help create a village atmosphere. This inner city suburb affords some great harbour views and is popular with renters and families for it's proximity to the main city CBD, and ready access to Wellington's south coast.

Early days

Cleveland St, Brooklyn in the early 1900's

And today

Cleveland St, Brooklyn in the early 2000's

In pre-European times, Maori knew the Brooklyn hills as Turanga-rere, "the waving plumes of a war-party". Also known as Ohiro (or Owhiro) by early European settlers, the name Brooklyn came about when one of the original farms in the area was renamed Brooklyn, after the New York Borough.

In keeping with the theme an area of the town belt established as a park in 1913 was named Central Park, after the area of the same name in New York. Situated  in Brooklyn Road, and seperating Brooklyn and the main city CBD, it remains a popular inner city park. During WWII, what is now the Renouf Tennis Centre, was the location of Camp Central Park, one of a number of US military camp sites established in and around Wellington.

Brooklyn Hill Tramway

Residential development of Brooklyn commenced slowly beginning in the 1880's and accelerated quickly once an electric tram service was established in the early 1900's. The trams ran up and down the hill from 1906 till 1957 when they were replaced by trolley buses. The easy curves of Brooklyn road were built so that the trams could negotiate the hill.
