North America has three primary watersheds. Visiting this Earth Cache will provide you with some insight into one of the rivers that is a part of the Artic Ocean watershed.
The Bow River begins it's journey to Hudson Bay at its source, Bow Lake, high up in the Rocky Mountains. Water flows from Bow Lake along the Bow Valley corridor through alpine, foothill and semi-arid short grass prairie before it joins the Old Man River west of Medicine Hat, Alberta. Water that started in Bow Lake will ultimately end up in the Artic Ocean at Hudson Bay.
At ground zero you are not too far from the major divide between the Artic and Pacific watersheds. Through this portion of Alberta, the Provinical boundary with British Columbia closely follows the contiental divide - the topographical decision maker for which way water will flow.
Your visit to this Earth Cache will bring you to a location that can provide further insight to the life and function of the Bow River. Please take the time to learn a little more about this very important resource to Southern Alberta.
To log your find please email us the following information:
1. What is the approximate size of the area that drains into the Bow River?
2. How many large irrigation districts are served by the Bow River?
3. After the Bow River joins the Old Man River what other water bodies does this water join before reaching Hudson Bay?
4. Humans have developed many ways to cross large bodies of water. What year was the vehicle bridge at this location erected?
Thank you for taking the time to visit this EC. Happy learning and happy caching!
