Geocache Description:

Shoreline Park cache is nestled between working boatyards to north and the San Francisco Bay Model  to the south.  The cache was originally placed near a slanted red rock, later moved to the bushes where it has disappeared frequently. It is back at the original red rock/concrete slab tucked in plain sight near the top. Please put it back where you found it.

Congrats to Kablooey for FTF!

The Marinship Corporation built the shipyards in early 1942 by leveling nearby hills to fill in marshland. The shipyard’s 6 ways produced 6 Victory ships just before the 1st anniversary of Pearl Harbor.  In 3½ years the Marinship launched 15 Liberty ships, 16 fleet oilers, and 62 tankers — a total of 93 ships — averaging one every 13 days.  At its peak, 20,000 workers were employed at Marinship.

This area is part of the Public Shoreline. If you're driving, park near the sign for the Shoreline Park. It's behind and to the left of the two Marinship Plaza buildings. Go past the sign and you will be facing the Marinship way #3 - a "U" shape pickleweed filled area directly in front of you. The exposed pilings once supported the wood flooring of the way.  Ways 4, 5 and 6 are to your left.  With a bit of luck you might see San Francisco fireboat or ferry being repaired in way #4, or a houseboat in way #5.

The majority of Shoreline Park will be to your right. Grass, paths, a pier for the marina, a sailing school office, and occasionally a big tent for special events now cover ways #1 and #2. Dogs and their human companions love the grassy areas. Owners are supposed to pick up after their pets, but sometimes forget. I recommend staying on the paths. Relax and enjoy.

Three historical photos are posted to show what this area looked like pre and during WWII.

For more information about the Marinship during WWII go to History of the ICB, Sausalito History, Wikipedia or go visit the Marinship Exhibit at the Bay Model.  It’s worth the visit and there’s a cache nearby.
