The Loop #1 Looking A-Cross Lastingham

I am placing this cache on Father’s Day, because my dad loves to walk his dogs up to this cross as part of a ‘loop’ he does from Spaunton, down Lidsty Hill, through Lastingham and back up Spaunton Bank.
This cache is located in Spaunton, near to a commemorative cross which gives fantastic views across the village of Lastingham.
This is the only Spaunton/Lastingham-based cache (so far!!), I hope you enjoy this beautiful part of the North York Moors National Park.
The gritstone cross dates back to 1897 and commemorates the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria, while the hexagonal base (also made of gritstone) dates back to 1837 – when Queen Victoria came to the throne.
In addition, it is thought to have originally been a sanctuary cross for the church of St Mary based in Lastingham. This is an ancient church containing a Norman crypt, although its foundations date back even further to the 650’s.
Please note: the final few steps to the cache may be a little tricky – sensible shoes and a fearless stride are needed, but otherwise it shouldn’t present too many problems. Please also note the route to the cache is mostly wheelchair and pushchair friendly across a grassy path until the last part.
There is some scope for off-road parking on the nearby grassy verges, but please take care not to block farmers’ gates etc.
The cache is big enough for small – medium items and contains a log book & pencil.
