Mrs Bear has always loved to look up the history of and to walk along the disused railway lines of the UK, in particular Essex. We hope that this could become a series of caches located at some of the interesting structures that used to form part of these railway lines.
This cache is a small tupperware container, with rooms for small swaps or trackables. Please bring a scribbler.
The Halstead and Colne Valley railway ran between Chappel and Wakes Colne station and Haverhill. It was opened in stages between April 1860 and May 1863. The section that this bridge crosses was opened in July 1861 and is between the stations of Halstead and Sible and Castle Hedingham. There is still a live steam railway museum just up the road at Sible Hedingham. The line was closed to passengers in 1961 and closed to freight in 1965. The line was eventually taken up in 1966.
The route of the Halstead and Colne Valley Railway is shown below.
The public footpaths around here tend to cross the disused railway, although you can walk along some sections, particularly to the north of Halstead. The cache is situated just over 200m north east of a road bridge over the old line.
We parked in a small lay-by, at the parking waypoint to the north of the bridge and walked down to the cache site, which is about 40 metres away and on route to or back from the road bridge cache. The road/track is very narrow along here and you should be very careful, although we didn't see any other vehicles when placing the cache. We hope that you enjoy this cache, either on your way too or back from the road bridge cache.
Happy caching
