Le Fort de Malonne fait partie de la ceinture de 9 forts construits autour de Namur à la fin du XIXème siècle, et ayant la Citadelle comme poste de commandement.
Lors des combats de 1914, les forts, soumis à de forts tirs d’artillerie hors de la portée de leurs armes avait été obligés de se rendre lorsque l’air était devenu irrespirable, la ventilation des forts étant désastreuse, voire inexistante.
Le réarmement des forts au milieu des années 1930, pallia à ce défaut critique. On les équipa de prises d'air extérieures, situées à une distance de plusieurs centaines de mètres (200 à 600 m parfois) et installées invariablement au flanc ou au sommet d'une pente (les gaz de combat sont plus denses que l'air...). Ces tours, en forme de champignon de hauteur variable suivant les cas, sont reliées au fort par un long couloir au départ duquel, côté fort, est installé un ventilateur d'aspiration.

De Fort van Malonne behoort tot een reeks van 9 forten gebouwd rond Namen op het einde van de negentiende eeuw, met de Citadelle als Hoofdkwartier.
Gedurende de gevechten van 1914, de forts blootgesteld aan sterk artillerievuur buiten het bereik van hun wapens hebben overgegeven wanneer de lucht werd verstikkend, door gebrek aan ventilatie.
De herbewapening van de forten in het midden van de jaren 1930, verbetert deze kritische problemen. De forten werden met luchtinlaten op een afstand van enkele honderden meters (200 tot 600 m soms) ingericht en geplaatst in de zijde of op een helling (gif gas is zwaarder dan lucht ...). Deze paddenstoelvormige torens van variabele hoogte werden op het fort (en een afzuigventilator) door een lange gang aangesloten.

During the fightings of 1914, the forts subjected to strong artillery shelling out of the reach of their weapons were forced to surrender when the air became unbreathable, the ventilation of forts being disastrous, or inexistent.
The rearming of the forts mid-1930s solved these critical faults. They were fitted with air intake vents located at a distance of several hundred meters (200 to 600 m) and invariably installed on the side or on top of a slope (poison gas is heavier than air ...). These mushroom-shaped towers of variable height were connected to the fort by a long corridor. At the fort side was also installed an exhaust fan.
