The actual cemetery for the Village of Talpa is located at N36 20.650 W105 35.338. Due to a narrow road, parking and houses on three sides, we decided to place the Bison Tube cache here.
Talpa was settled in the early 18th Century as part of the general colonization of the Ranchos de Taos area. Talpa likely took the name of Talpa from Jalisco, Mexico. The name means Knob and could refer to a local hill. Also, a Senora Talpa Romero belonged to a prominent Taos family in the 19th Century and may have used her name.
There is also a Morada at this cemetery. A morada is a church where the pentitentes worshiped. The sect Los Hermanos Pentitentes (The Penitente Brothers) was a fraternal order society active throughout the 19th and 20th Centuries in Northern NM.
Spirit caches are a series placed at or near NM cemeteries in hopes of paying respect to the Pioneer ancestors having "gone'' on before us, and, possibly picking up a bit of history of the area.
