A pine cone can be used to predict the weather. It is simple...
When the air is humid, the scales on a pine cone absorb the moisture and expand, causing them to bend inward, or to close the pinecone. When the air is dry, the scales shrink and bend outward, causing the pine cone to open. The scales on a pine cone are there to protect it's seeds. Just one seed is produced on the inner side of each scale. A seed can be carried further by the wind when it is dry & more lightweight. Even after all of its seeds have been released, a pine cone will continue to open & close as the humidity changes.
