Ghosts of 1812 - Decou (Decew) House Traditional Cache

Part of the "Ghosts of 1812 Series". This cache is a good sized container with lots of swag and a log with pen.  The Decew House was used as a base for British Soldiers during the War of 1812, so in that spirit, the cache has lots of room for trackables to bunk down for a while on the way to their next stop of their journey.  Congratulations to mijojelweslandon for being the first to find this cache! Now on to the story...

Decew House is a location of great historical significance.  The house was originally built in 1808 by John Decew.  Four years later when war broke out in 1812, Decew House became a British military headquarters.

Decew House was Laura Secord's destination when she set out from Queenston over the rough terrain of the Niagara Escarpment in June of 1813 to warn the British of an impending American attack.  As a result, the British, in partnership with the Iroquois, were able to defeat the Americans at the Battle of Beaver Dams. On June 12, 1950, Decew House was virtually destroyed by fire. Today the foundation is preserved as a memorial and park site.
