This is the first I a series of caches highlighting historic churches in Halifax County, VA. And of course the first installment happens to be the church where I serve as pastor.
North Fork has been serving the Virgilona, VA community since 1874. The first worshippers met underneath a brush arbor. North Fork Baptist Church is a member of the Dan River Baptist Association, the Baptist General Association of Virginia, and the Southern Baptist Convention. For many years, North Fork was part of a six church field served by one pastor. During this time the Rev. E.R. Harris was pastor for 23 years. In 1974 North Fork called their first full time pastor, the Rev. Harry Smith.
The current pastor is Scott Welch, who also happens to be the CO of this cache. I am often in my study in the parsonage so feel free to stop by to say hello when you come hunting this cache. Our county's churches are a great treasure so it makes sense to place some cache treasure at these sites.
The location of the cache is adjacent to the church. Please park at the church when looking for this cache. Feel free to walk around and look at the grounds. North Fork has recently remodeled its sanctuary (2009) and added landscaping (2012). One of my favorite things to do is examining the graves in the cemetery. Lots of stories can be told in the headstones. Happy caching!
