Geocache Description:

Cruachan

This cache will take you to the top of a hill overlooking Dungarvan. If the weather is right, then you should have fantastic views all around.

The Location

Cruachán, or Crohaun as it appears sometimes, is a cairn topped hill with its summit at 484mts above sea level. If you are approaching Dungarvan town, which it overlooks, it is visibly recognisable as the hill with the telecommunications tower on it. You will get a better view of the tower on the ascent of the hill. Parking co ordinates have been provided, and you could tackle 2 more nearby caches from here - "View through a bullethole" and "Pointy Rock".
The route up the hill is rough and appropriate footwear should be worn. I cannot guarantee a totally dry experience, some of the ground you must cover is marshy and covered with heather. There is a trail direct to the cairn,
At the start of the trail, there is a sign prohibiting dogs so please take note. Also, the land on the other side of the barbed wire fence to your right as you ascent, is Coilte owned, and there is no need to cross into it. This cache is not wheelchair accessable. The walk up is not too taxing. An average person could do the round trip in an hour, but i suggest that on a fine day, you sit down and absorb the scenery, and don't forget your camera.
Views south will show you Dungarvan and Helvick Head reaching out into the Celtic Sea, north will show you the Monavullagh Mountains. To the west, the peaks of the Knockmealdowns can be seen.
The cross at the top, was built in 1987, and you will notice the blue colour, to commemorate the counties sporting colour.
The cairn is 30mts in diametre, and 3 mts high, and contains a walkers shelter or windbreak (no rain cover though)

The Cache

The cache is a clear tab lock tupperware container (small), containing a logbook and a few trinkets. FTF, page 1 is yours . It is wrapped in dark gauze and is hidden away from the cairn. I will ask you to bring your own pen, there is one provided, but just in case. And please, replace the cache as you found it.

Please take care on the way up, look after the geokids, and have fun.
Well done General Melchett, Sir on your FTF
