Wilderness Island Park Traditional Cache

After industries stopped production nearby in the 1920’s, the park stood as a preserved forest surrounded by the Wanaque River.  Due to the fact that this is located in a heavy flood zone which would require construction workers to fill the park all the way up to the level of Hamburg Turnpike, citizens of the town decided they would rather preserve the woods.  As a result, citizens pooled their money and purchased the land from the previous owners and donated it to the town with intentions of making it a park; thus Wilderness Island Park was born.  After it was learned that local industries had irreversibly contaminated the top 12-18 inches of the soil, the decision was made that the soil and all of the trees in the immediate area would have to be removed.  This long process was recently completed and now fresh soil and newly planted trees adorn the park.  Although still in its infancy stage, Wilderness Island Park should blossom for years to come as a natural beauty in the middle of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey.
