Williamstown Wetlands Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

WV_Traveler: Visited the cache today. As an FYI, it was there and in excellent shape. Unfortunately, after speaking to the property owner about the No Trespassing signs, I must archive this one. Due to liability issues with the deteriorating boardwalk, it is being demolished so I retrieved the container from its hiding spot. Thanks to all of those who searched for this over the years. It had a good run. Maybe the container will pop up again as another cache.

Geocache Description:

A cache in my hometown. The cache is hidden along the Williamstown Wetland Trail. The Wetlands are located near the intersection of Highland Ave. and Waverly Rd. (E. 4th St.) in downtown Williamstown, WV. The approx. 3/8 mile loop trail is a relatively level paved path with two well designed boardwalk sections over the wetter areas. The entire path is handicapped-accessible however the cache itself is not. The area closes at dark.

** Congrats to Bee-man on the FTF! **

Known in my childhood as simply "the swamp," the wetlands were looked upon then as a useless place to dump junk, yard waste, etc. The only beneficial use we recognized was wintertime ice skating. Later efforts to "improve" it by draining failed - fortunately. Today, the area is recognized for the diverse ecosystem it embodies. Since about 2002 a project has been in the works to clean up and beautify the area, and develop it as a nature sanctuary. The project was spearheaded by the Williamstown Women's Club. Other local organizations - such as the Citizens Conservation Corps and Boy Scouts - are involved, as well as individual voluteers and the West Virginia DNR. After much work obtaining grants, permissions and permits, actual cleanup and trail construction began in the fall of 2011. The trail is now essentially complete and includes an observation deck and several benches, sponsored by local businesses. The majority of the 5-acre wetland is part of the da Vinci's property and has been leased to the Women's Club for the project. The best parking for the cache is located at the trailhead near the rear of the lot behind the restaurant. For a longer walk, there is a small pull-off area along Waverly Rd. near the intersection of Highland Ave. The cache is a unique container, designed to blend into its surroundings. It has capacity for a few small trading items. There is a 1934 wheat penny for the FTF. The cache is placed with permission from the restaurant management. Enjoy!
