This cache has been archived.

Bunjil: Unfortunately I cannot see any information that indicates that steps have been taken to resolve the issue/s associated with this placement. Therefore as advised previously, the cache is being de-listed (Archived) to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

The Geocache Maintenance guideline explains what needs to happen with a Disable cache.

Caches that have been archived for lack of maintenance will not be unarchived. This is explained in the Help Center article here.

If you wish to contact me please send an email via my profile - Bunjil, and quote the cache name and GC number.

Geocache Description:

The City of London's 2012 Olympic Games are being held in Stratford City, East London. Today we welcome you to Stratford upon Avon, half a world away from the Olympics.

PARKING
Make sure you pull well off the road here as the Princess Highway here can be very busy, close by there is off highway parking, you will see what I mean.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Stratford is situated at an historic river ford, on the banks of the beautiful Avon River (some 232 kms east of Melbourne). The Avon is now thankfully traversed by the Princes Highway and the Melbourne to Bairnsdale Railway.

Though some dispute exists as to origin of the town's name, including being a variation of “straight ford”, the most plausible explanation seems to be that it is named after the birthplace of William Shakespeare at Stratford-on-Avon in England.

The region was settled by Gippsland's first great explorer, Angus McMillan, who named the Avon River after a body of water in his native Scotland. He established a pastoral run in 1840 at Bushy Creek, (north-west of Stratford), he was responsible for many other pastoral runs settled by squatters in Gippsland, including Johnsonville and Swans Reach (between Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance).

Stratford prospered in the 1860s as a supply centre for diggers at the Omeo and Dargo goldfields. Stratford has two parks adjacent to the Avon River, the bed of which has proved attractive to gemstone collectors over the years.

Information derived from the Stratford Historic Society at the Stratford Courthouse, 66 Princess Highway, Stratford, VIC (open Tuesdays).

Sister Cities to Stratford are:
* Stratford, Ontario in Canada;
* Stratford, Connecticut in the USA
* Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire in England;
* Stratford, Prince Edward Island in Canada;
* Stratford, NewZealand (North Island); and
* Stratford, Victoria in Australia.

NOT THE HOME OF LONDON'S 2012 OLYMPICS
Unfortunately if you were to visit one of the sister cities, you would not find the 2012 London Olympics, as they are being held in Stratford a suburb of London, which is also home to the Olympic Atheletes Viilage. Stratford in London is not part of the sister cities program, however we thought it was a good way to mark the 2012 Olympics by placing this cache.
