Geocache Description:

A little cache in the pleasant village of Thurlestone.

On the rough stormy night of September 24th 1772 the 300 ton Barque 'Chanteloupe' got in severe trouble before being wrecked on Thurlestone Rock.
The ship carried a cargo of Sugar,Coffee,Rum and Madeira Wine and was heading home to London after leaving Grenada in the Windward Islands.
Virtually all hands were lost with the exception of the Second Mate out of the 13 crew and 7 passengers.
Rumours of treasures on board abounded as one of the passengers was John Burque esq.whom just two days before sailing had sold a plantation for the princely sum of £32,000.
The wreck remains covered by several feet of sand and various Musket shot and Cannon still lay there in their watery grave. The 'Chanteloupe' was one of fourteen ships wrecked in the great storm. Shipwrecked
Pig Fat Soap

The above photo is a 240 year old bar of pig fat soap brought up from the wreck and was kindly donated to me by a member of the Thurlestone Hotel staff.
