A Little History on the Mausoleum

Abraham Shannon was born in 1820 at Limavaddy, Nothern Ireland. He was the first of his family to migrate and arrived in South Australia in 1839. He settled at Gumeracha. His father William began farming in the hills north-east of Angaston in 1843 calling his property Duck Ponds. Abraham leased land in this area in 1845 whilst maintaing his property in Gumeracha. In 1847 he married Eliza Mahood. In 1851 Abraham purchased land in the Duck Ponds region and in 1853 built their home "Teeneeningla". Their marriage was blessed with eleven children.

Abraham had a portion of his land surveyed for the establishment of a township in 1865 and named it Moculta an aboriginal word for large hill (Parrot Hill). It had been Abraham's intention to build a family mausoleum having sent to Italy for plans. Abraham died in 1875 before the work commenced.

In 1876-77 Eliza Shannon erected the mausoleum, a 20 sided structure of cut sandstone and Mintaro slate all above ground as a memorial to her husband. It was built to hold 80 interments and to date 24 family members have been buried there. A tablet was installed in the passageway of the mausoleum in 1936 by the descendants of the Shannon family.
