Every Independence Day we gather in front of the Sun Trust Bank to watch the parade. We usually try to get there early, so that we can find a good spot. It's great fun to watch the marching bands, the fire trucks, the dancers, and the politicians. Sometimes Virginia's governor shows up. The ring of the bag-pipes will send shivers down your spine. The official Redskin's Band performs here. They also have a classic car show with some impressive entries.
After the parade we like to watch the fire fighter competition, where they hook up their hoses, put out the fire, and then inadvertently spray the crowd.
We have a contingency plan, should we get seperated:
Head in the direction of a big white building with black shutters;
If frightened and having a hard time, turn left;
pass an elevated hedge;
count nine black streetlight-poles;
turn left and wait under the shade of the big tree!
If you reach the west, you have gone too far.
