Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden at this location. High muggle area, so need to be vigilant - magnetic.

The chaldron wagon dates back to the mid-seventeenth century and the early wooden wagonways of Tyneside. The common size was approximately 42 cwt. capacity, however around 1820 the capacity standardized at around 53 cwt, with bottom openings and a dead weight of between 24 and 30cwt. The chaldron was the adopted name of the new size wagons on the Great Northern Coalfield. From the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825 upto the mid 1850's, the chaldron wagon was used continuously and without modification. By this time there were approximately 16,000 in use on the railway. They had cast iron wheels and during severe winter weather as many a 1500 could be broken in a single month. Upwards of 25 wagons formed the train, according to the early records of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. Slowly the capacity was increased upto 3 tons and by the mid 1860's these were upgraded to 4 tons by the addition of "greedy boards" fastened to the top rail. Many colliery owned chaldron wagons continued to be built in this style until the early years of the twentieth century, and there were instances of them still being used upto the 1950's.
