Geocache Description:

Church Micro IE 25 - Donaghadee Parish Church, Donaghadee

Donaghadee Parish Church, Donaghadee

Donaghadee Parish Church (Church of Ireland) and adjoining churchyard.

The site of the church is believed to have been a place of worship since the time of the Druids. St Patrick is also believed to have visited when a stone church was erected (circa 5th Century AD), known as the Church of "Dofnachti".

A more substantial building is thought to have been erected by John de Courcy c1177. This was rebuilt in 1626 by Hugh Montgomery and other Scottish settlers to the area during the Ulster Plantation.

Built from local stone taken from Newry, Dundonald and Dungannon, the church was enlarged in 1881. The stone tower was built in 1833 by Captain Daniel De Lacherois and includes a bell weighing over a ton which was donated by the same family.

The adjoining churchyard contains graves dating from the 17th Century, many in excellent condition.  Various members of the notable De Lacherois family and the grandfather of James Craig, Northern Ireland’s first Prime Minister, are buried in this churchyard.

The cache is not in Church grounds. It is a magnetic nano, please bring a pen & replace carefully. There is adequate, off street parking next to the cache.

The Church Micro IE series is open to everyone; if you have a church you would like to place a cache at then please contact THE_Chris through Geocaching.com. This is to keep track of the numbers of the churches and give you the general format for the cache page. In the UK there are ~1500 caches in the series so we have some catching up to do! Also, if you currently have a published cache at a church that you would like to include in the series, get in contact and we can add it.
