Geocache Description:

Church Micro IE 26 - Christ Church, Carrowdore

Christ Church, Carrowdore

Christ Church (Church of Ireland) and adjoining churchyard.

PLEASE APPROACH FROM THE PARKING COORDS. ANY OTHER ROADWAY TO THIS CACHE IS STRICTLY PRIVATE.

At the top of a long, narrow tree-lined county lane, Christ Church is located just outside of both Millisle and Carrowdore, on the Ards Peninsula only a couple of minutes drive from the Irish Sea, and was built in 1843.

This beautiful little church, known locally as the ‘Church on the hill’, is the burial place of the famous Irish poet and playwright, Frederick Louis MacNeice CBE (12 September 1907 – 3 September 1963) was an Irish poet and playwright. He passed away from viral pneumonia while carrying out research, in a damp cave in Yorkshire.

Although Louis MacNeice, spent most of his adult life in England – he attended Oxford University and for much of his life he was an academic - he never forgot his Northern Irish roots – he was born in Belfast.

The cache is not on Church property. It is a traditional type, black, magnetic nano, so please bring your own pen. Approach the cache location and parking waypoint from the Woburn Road. The Church is signposted from there. To reach the cache, you should walk from the parking waypoint, to the kissing gate (about 1 minute up a slight slope). It is a good tarmac road the whole way there.

Walk through the churchyard to the rear gate which is directly in front of you. Go over the style/steps to the outside of the Church.

The Church Micro IE series is open to everyone; if you have a church you would like to place a cache at then please contact THE_Chris through Geocaching.com. This is to keep track of the numbers of the churches and give you the general format for the cache page. In the UK there are ~1500 caches in the series so we have some catching up to do! Also, if you currently have a published cache at a church that you would like to include in the series, get in contact and we can add it.
