Welcome to a short segment of the Iditarod National Historic Trail, where miners followed Alaska Native historical routes over this low point between the marine environment of Prince William Sound and the rest of south-central Alaska. From this launching point, using muscle-powered boats, modern-day travelers can reach the point where the Portage Pass trail comes over from Whittier and descends to Portage Lake.

Mrs NW points out the Portage Glacier tour boat to our grandsons from bench near cache.

Use forest-friendly 'lift-look-replace' methods when searching, and do not trample standing vegetation. Please don't overtighten the Mega-Bison's lid. This cache is intended to be easy to find, yet hidden from the casual passerby. Refer to the photos in the gallery for helpful (spoiler) hints about the hide location and the 'mega-bison' - and enjoy your time along the Trail of Blue Ice!

Mega-Bison & view east up Portage Lake towards Portage Glacier.

It is possible to see the very leading edge of Portage Glacier from the bench located at the southern end of this short little trail!
