Geocache Description:

This is our first multi cache. The cache is not hidden at the above coordinates, but can be found nearby.

In 2011, the streetscape in Sapperton changed dramatically. The old trees were cut down and the heaving sidewalks replaced. The City’s budget allowed for the creation and installation of three mosaic tiles at the two crosswalks in Sapperton. A fourth mosaic was paid for by one of the long time businesses in Sapperton. Once you look at the mosaics, you will know which one it is.

There are descriptive didactic signs near each of the four tiles. Clues to the final location of the cache can be found on the didactics.

First go to N 49° 13.807' W 122° 53.561' and read the signs there. Read the signs determine the following:
A = Number of letters in the first part of the glass company name.
B = Number of men in the picture with the sturgeon.
C = The bowling alley was a ?-pin lane. Subtract one from this number.
D = The last digit in the year the pictured sturgeon was pulled from the river.
E = The third digit in the year the photo of The Retreat Saloon was taken.
F=the number of time the logo of the Royal Engineers (RE) appears around the edge of each of the tile mosaics.

Use the above information and go to N 49° 13.ABC' W 122° 53.DEF' and read the signs there. Read the signs determine the following:

G = Last digit in the year the photo of the retired members of the Royal Engineers was taken.
HI = The number of members on the steering committee minus 2.
J = The sum of the last two digits of the year that Cap sold his first bike.
K = The last digit of the year the original prison building opened.
L = The number of letters in the last name of the prison escapee mentioned.

Use the above, go to N 49° 13.GHI' W 122° 53.JKL' where you will find the cache.

Take a moment to appreciate where the final is. In 1859, the first trail (now North Road) from the Royal Engineer’s Camp was surveyed and constructed past this point. At one time, a high flagpole was erected here flying the Union Jack and it was locally called Union Hill. The BC Electric Railway Company extended the Columbia streetcar tracks through here in 1911. The tracks of the Burnaby Lake interurban line left the road right-of-way from New Westminster and headed to the northwest on the BECE railway corridor through Union Hill to connect to Vancouver. A small wooden building on the site was Sapperton Station. When New Westminster’s streetcar system was discontinued in 1937, Sapperton Triangle became the terminus of the Burnaby Lake interurban line. In 1953, the final run of the tram left this park quiet except for the ever increasing traffic around it on North Road and Braid Street.

You will need your own pen for this cache.
