Geocache Description:

An old cache, part of the new series.

This series is a combination of traditional and Adventure Lab caches based on Arthur Ransome's children's book Secret Water. The whole trail is approximately 6 miles long and follows the southern coast of the Hamford Water National Nature Reserve, known as the Backwaters. BUT bear in mind that you will have to get back from Landermere, where the trail finishes (or from Kirby le Soken, if you decide to do the trail from west to east). There is no public transport to Landermere, and walking back along the road is treacherous due to lack of pavements - this is NOT RECOMMENDED. There are also no public footpaths to take shortcuts, and no vehicular access to the Backwaters to get a lift (except at Landermere).

Options are: to arrange to be picked up by a willing friend or taxi at Landermere; to do the walk as a there and back; or to pair up and leave a car at each end (there is very limited parking at Landermere, although more a bit further on at Beaumont Quay). Good luck!

Arthur Ransome (most famous as the author of Swallows & Amazons) was a keen sailor and sailed on the Backwaters himself. He published the children's story Secret Water in 1939, with all 6 children of the Swallows and Amazons in the main roles, and meeting a local group of children calling themselves the Eels. They camped on Horsey Island (renamed Swallow Island by the children) and spent their week mapping the Backwaters. It's a great adventure story which has stood the test of time.

The area is now an SSSI as well as a National Nature Reserve, important for wading birds in particular.
