Geocache Description:

Lojze Spacal - največji likovni interpret Krasa

Lojze Spacal - the greatest interpreter of Karst in image

Lojze Spacal was born on 15. June 1907 in Trieste. His early childhood was harsh as he lost his father at the age of four and started to provide for himself and the family with the earnings from occasional jobs at the age of eleven. In parallel, he attended Slovene schools in Trieste. He was arrested because of his antifascist activity in 1929 and confined in Southern Italy for three years, during which time he started contemplating a career in painting. In 1936 he achieved baccalaureate at the fine arts lyceum in Venice and a habilitation of art teacher in Rome. He studied at the Institute of decorative arts in Monza and Brera academy in Milan. During World War II he was again arrested and confined in concentration camp Corropoli. After the war he settled in Trieste, renovated an old house in Piran and as a commitment to Karst rebuilt a typical Karst country house in Škrbina na Krasu in his own style. His public artistic life began with a group exhibition in Trieste in 1937, followed by personal exhibition three years later. An exhibition in Milan brought him acclaim of Italian critics and an introduction in Slovene art magazine Umetnost by Fran Šijanec. Later, he exhibited his work regularly in Trieste and Ljubljana, took part in several group exhibitions in Italy and Yugoslavia, participated at most important biennials of graphic art and had many personal exhibitions all over the world. Works, exhibited at Venice biennials in 1948, 1954 and 1958, established him as one of the leading Italian graphic artists, while the prizes he won on several occasions in the 1960's placed him in the mainstream of world graphic art. The artist, who continued to work in Trieste and spent most summers in Škrbina na Krasu, died on 6. May 2000, only two weeks after the opening of major retrospective exhibition of his work in Modern Gallery in Ljubljana.

Published coordinates will lead you to the inner yard of the Štanjel medieval castle. There, you will find a gallery with permanent exhibiton of Spacal's works. The gallery opened in 1988, when the artist donated 51 paintings, 78 prints and a tapestry to the municipality of Sežana. We strongly suggest you to visit the gallery. Opening times change seasonally, you can get the information from the Tourist Information Centre Štanjel.

N 45 49.H(H+C)(A-E)
E 013 50.(C+D)(A-F)(B-H)

You will find the cache using the above coordinates. To calculate the missing values, look for an obvious object near the entrance to the yard. Without it, life in the castle would have been very hard. The inscription, carved into it, dates it to almost 18th century. Transform the first line of the inscription using the method one letter one digit to ABCD. The second line is the number EFGH.
