Geocache Description:

The Great Oak, Great Yeldham

'The Great Oak' (sometimes known as 'The Old Oak') is the remains of a 1000 year old (at least) Oak Tree in Great Yeldham, North Essex (UK). The Oak was once 80 feet high and what is left of the trunk was encased in concrete in 1949 to prevent it collapsing in on itself.
This tree is so old it is written about in William The Conquerers 'Doomsday Book' of 1086. An old image of the tree is also shown at the top of this page with an oil lamp seller on what is now the main A1017 road which runs from Haverhill through to Halstead along with an image of the tree as it is today with it's concrete supporting structure.

This cache is a nano so you will need to bring a pen/pencil, please be careful not to damage the log when removing it from the cache and when replacing please place the rolled up log in the lid of the cache first so that the thread on the container doesn't damage the log roll.

STEALTH WILL BE REQUIRED AS THIS SPOT IS IN THE CENTRE OF THREE ROADS AND THERE ARE ALWAYS LOTS OF PEOPLE!

PLEASE REPLACE THE CACHE AS FOUND
