Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the Pvt. George Shannon Trail caches that will lead you throughout Northeastern Nebraska. Pvt. Shannon became lost near here while traveling with Lewis and Clark and the Corp of Discovery in 1804.

Private Shannon probably traveled through the Verdel area nearly 100 years before Verdel was established in about 1902.  The town of Verdel was once a thriving little town and was started by the railroad laying track from Norfolk to Winner, SD.   Although the exact date the jail was built has not been found, it was in existence before the 1930's. In the 1960's, the last occupant was a rowdy drunk awaiting transport to the Knox County jail. Look over its construction, I believe no one was going to excape from this jail! Due to his early travels, Shannon missed the great people of Verdel  AND the Verdel jail.   Check out the town and enjoy this caching adventure!

Learn more about Pvt. Shannon at http://www.shannontrail.com and about the history of Verdel at http://www.casde.unl.edu./history/counties/knox/verdel.  This is a very interesting little town!
