Geocache Description:

A geocaching.hu oldalon a ládát GCZOM2 név alatt találod.

A short visit in the old Catholic cemetery of Sombor. Many beautiful memorials to see.

Opening hours:
In the summer: 6 am to 7 pm
In the winter: 7 am to 5 pm
(Unfortunately, the sign at the entrance doesn't explain what is considered summer or winter)

Saint Roch Catholic Cemetery (Szent Rókus Katolikus temetö)
Traditionally this was the cemetery of the Hungarian, German, Croatian and Bunyevac inhabitants of the city. As the number of Hungarians decreased the cemetery became more and more neglected. The beautiful, large monuments were surrounded by weeds, if they fell down, no one bothered the erect them, some of the simple ones were reused as stepping stones, vandalism, stealing of bronze ornaments, desecration happened regularly, especially in the last years of the 20th century.
Something has changed in the last few years. Some of the changes are good, some are not. The weeds are cut regularly. Some of the most beautiful graves were fixed up by the relatives or the patriots for the city association. Some graves were bought by Serbian families. This saves the momument, but erases history, as they get rid of the old names (but not the coat-of-arms of the old noble family!).

Help needed
If you can, please take secateurs or any tool with you that can be used in a cemetery. Pick a grave and cut off or pull out a few weeds! Even if you gather just one handful of weed or cut one vine that is forcing its way in the cracks of old tombstones you have already done something positive!

Parking
Parking is not allowed on the streets near the cemetery. You may park in front of the main gate, there is enough room for about 4 cars. See waypoint.
